Over 50 years of friendship
1970s
Following its establishment as a sovereign nation, the early history of the UAE saw the beginning of a fruitful and enduring diplomatic and cultural relationship with the UK.
Diplomatic highlights during this decade included the opening of the British Council in the UAE, the establishment of key trade agreements, and the first state visit by Queen Elizabeth II.
1980s
The 1980s saw numerous Emirati students attending educational institutions in the UK, alongside a notable increase in UAE investments in British businesses and real estate. Furthermore, King Charles (then Prince of Wales) visited Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai on his tour of the Gulf.
1990s
The 1990s was a transformative decade and included UAE-UK aviation partnerships, the consolidation of educational partnerships, a substantial increase in UK exports to the UAE, strategic defence and security agreements and the establishment of a British Tourist Authority office in Dubai.
2000s
The 2000s heralded the start of an even greater environmental focus as part of the UAE-UK friendship, characterised by joint efforts in renewable energy technology development and demonstrating a mutual commitment to sustainability. British universities opened campuses in the UAE also, and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip revisited the nation.
2010s
The creation of a UAE-UK task force led to the development of new educational initiatives, expanded sports and cultural exchanges, and strengthened ties among individuals, businesses, and charities in both nations. Furthermore, collaboration in space exploration and research saw notable progress, with significant UK scientific contributions to the Emirates Mars Mission.
